Attempting to choose university courses has been difficult as I am so unsure of which ones will suit me best or which are the best for what I am interested in. The main courses which I have been considering are at Kingston and the main body at UAL.
Illustration Animation at Kingston really caught my attention when we had a lecture from someone who works on the course. The work produced by the students was beautiful and made me think how much I would like to be in an environment where students come together and collaborate (as mentioned by the lecturer how two girls came together and worked together on a project) in such a way. However the draw back for this course for me is that I have never done animation before, it has always been something at the back of my mind, however I do not know how to go about it.
Then there are many courses at the various UAL colleges which have interested me and I have no idea how to choose between them. However, during my assessment next week I will talk to my tutor and hopefully this will help me figure this out. In order from most interested to not as much are the courses:
- Graphic Communication Design – CSM – Becoming a ‘versatile’ graphic designer would be extremely interesting and a part that is written on the site saying that the students are taught to ‘engage socially and culturally, understanding the power of design to shape human behaviour.’ embodies what I wish to do past uni, by intertwining my creative skills and a business environment. Looking through the online gallery of student work interested me too.
- Graphic Design – Camberwell – Eventhough I prefer CSM, this course caught my eye due to the student’s work, thus choosing between them is difficult.
- Illustration – Camberwell – I have been told that I should do illustration and so by researching this degree opened my eyes to this world which I had not considered before. However, illustration lies in balance with graphic design (if I do graphic design it will be with a more illustrative element). And again looking at the student work I am inspired to do this course. This is also similar to the one at Kingston.
- Illustration and visual media – LCC – I would not have usually considered this course however reading the overview on the course page led me to consider it heavily, ‘BA (Hons) Illustration and Visual Media is a studio-based course that aims to produce creative and innovative illustrators who are prepared to take risks with their work.’ And therefore i am considering this course as well
- Graphic Design Communication – Chelsea – Again another degree that seems so similar but again catches my attention. I believe my issue is that for uni I want to be in London, and that is my only criteria. I don’t mind which college I end up at and that is the issue, since each course is appealing to me at this moment it should be the location that discerns them from each other. However, i do not mind where I am in London, CSM would probably be my choice if I had to make one but thats due to how I have already been for an interview there for foundation and enjoyed talking to the interviewer.
- Graphic Branding and Identity – LCC – This degree appeals to the side of me which is obsessed with going into business and art. There is something about applying my skills which really catches an interest in a part of my mind. Ever since I fell in love with the work of Alphonse Mucha, such as his advert for Job cigarette papers I have wanted to bring this same kind of creativity to the world of business.
Therefore I can come to the conclusion that I need to discuss this with my tutor and make some decisions since I am so undecided.
