Personal Reflection – Text. Part II

For the second part of the project we were given some phrases with which we had to emphasise the meaning and create a form of narrative by placing it in a certain location. In my post ‘Type and Text’ I have already discussed what I did for part of this project and its links to other artists. But here I will discuss my own reflection and opinions on it.

As I have said, for the main part of the project I used the phrase ‘so where are they’ on pictures of my own memories to express the fleeting nature of humanity and our experiences. So, thinking about the type I used in the pictures, I used a similar type to the one I used in the letterpress workshop since in my opinion it brought the most to a piece as a communicator of my message and also aesthetically. It would have been nice to put some handwritten type of these images too, I would do another worksheet where I print off these pictures and with ink and a paintbrush with long bristles write in a loose and messy manner. However, using photoshop is something I favour since I would like so start producing artwork which is digital since I prefer the cleaner lines and the potential of what you are able to create since I have been using paper and pen for the majority of my time as an artist. This side of the project helped me think more about what I would like to do when I leave university and how I would like to learn how to communicate a story or a message by using my creative abilities and be a storyteller in a business environment. This perception of mine may change in time but at the moment after becoming bored with painting this is a new avenue which I am able to explore which I have become excited about and I need to have a deeper conversation with an expert and find out more. The talk we had on this subject ignited my interests even more due to brief looks at the work of Sagmeister and other famous graphic designers.

After spending a longer time on the photoshop side of the project, I honed in on the storytelling side of these phrases. After thought an idea came to me which I illustrated on a worksheet. I took some of the phrases like ‘The workplace’ and placed it on labels and parts of thing associated with female sexuality such as lingerie and stilettos. This was influence in a way by an artist who I have been following on Instagram for a while called Exotic Cancer ( https://www.instagram.com/exotic.cancer/ ). She is a stripper herself and satirises the people she meets in her work through her art and also empowers the women who are part of this lifestyle. However I took another perspective on this and used the lingerie as a canvas to demonstrate the darker side of the perception of women generally in the world. It is a wider issue which she is trying to break, it is women as well as sex-workers, that is the reason why her work interests me. I have stickers of her work on my laptop and they give me a sort of defiant feel, I am going to have these stickers no matter what others think, since why is female sexuality such taboo. Therefore getting these symbols of female sexuality and pasting phases on them which make us question the issue. I would have like to develop this idea further and possibly physically make these, or even make some samples and place them on a worksheet. If I had done it differently I would have thought more and made some quick samples from some scraps. However, time is an issue again, better time management will probably help.
