Hannah Hoch

I was advised to look at the work of Hannah Hoch to support my own artistic development. She was a woman who attempted to bring change in the society which she lived in and expressed this within her art, as well as this more general drive for change she also looked for acceptance in her own world of creatives. Hoch takes what is already there in society and changes and manipulates it, ultimately producing an image which comments on the issues which she saw in the state of the world she lived in.

The way that she brought her ‘cut and paste’ style unwaveringly into the realm of fine art is extremely respectable considering that she was also a woman in a world of men, I simply respect an individual who isn’t afraid to actively and overtly be who they are.

Image result for Hannah Höch Untitled, From an Ethnographic Museum (1930)Such as in this piece where she combines exotic pieces with erotic pieces. This demonstrates how women are seen in her society as something exotic and erotic, she is displaying this on the blue pedestal and set against the bright background. It demands attention and provides to the viewer an issue which she saw. The viewer may not know from where the exotic pieces originate demonstrates the demands for exoticism and sensuality in women in an almost blind manner. Thus demonstrating the base desire for women’s sexuality.
