Our trip to the Design Museum in Kensington was the first time I have been to a museum where solely work by designers is exhibited. It provided me with the ability to see work from many different types of designers under one roof and altogether it was an interesting experience. I am going to discuss the pieces which I caught my attention whilst going round the exhibitions.

Cicerone Elettronico – Ugo La Pietra. Meaning ‘Communication Between the Home and the City’ this piece by Ugo La Pietra, a radical italian architect, captured my eye due to its simplicity and its collage style. My own collage is exceedingly haphazard and busy however there is something about this use of simple line drawings and black and white photography that I like and how collage is able to be simplistic and still thought provoking.

Cities: Moving – Ron Herron. This piece is a fusion of science fiction and popular culture which stylistically I think is captivating. This hypothetical world of the future which defies borders and imagines a mobile city. It is the thought process of creating something like this that fascinated me, I would have liked to ask him at the point when he was planning this what his inspiration and thought process was.
Life, Supersurface: The Happy Island. This piece is a proposal for a way of living in the future where there is a grid and we do not need objects or to work, which I find is increasingly relevant in today’s society and our use of the internet and how we live through it. To me this concept is interesting as I have seen this increasing dependency on technology in the younger generations including my own. I recently read something about the children of today, it is said that they have exceptional processing skills but bad long term memory. This is due to things such as scrolling through social media and so on, this dependency and slow journey towards this grid idea is starting to become a possible outcome in our future. The way that this is executed also caught my attention, again the collage style is what interested me. The retro figures too are something which I like and the way it is projected on a wall.

It’s the Buzz, Cock! – Linder Sterling. This piece is probably most close to my own style and I love it, being on a lightbox it commands your attention and the message is clear. This feminist critique of the way that domestic appliances are marketed and had become inseparable from the female is such a strong message to portray since this is an issue which half the world’s population faces. The sexuality mixed with the straight-line appliance in this image is such an interesting combination too.
After being to this exhibition these few images will be the influence for my next project.
