Sustainable Futures

My ideas for this project concern human clutter. There is so much rubbish in the world and we have so much junk but where will it go? I have carried on my ideas from Spellbound since I have found a concept and style which I am enjoying exploring at the moment. Therefore I considered how in the future how all our rubbish will affect us and change us, therefore I have started to create human monsters of the future and been considering how we can become embodiments of trash in a almost apocalyptic world. Even though there are incentives to recycle and work being done on becoming sustainable there is still so much about our consumer natures that will constantly follow the mass corporation and desire to satisfy our needs which comes along with buying clutter and consuming which comes along with rubbish. I support the idea of being sustainable, recycling, better packaging etc. However, everyday I produce so much clutter from what I eat, wear and use (phones, cars etc).

Therefore I have looked at artists who utilise this idea of clutter which I have in my mind. Such as Henrik Drescher and his use of ‘image debris’. Marjan Teeuwan’s way that she creates sculptures from balancing clutter became inspiration for the way that I can create monsters for his project. I have looked at Ron Herron and Superstudio as well as I like their futuristic concepts of a different world. Especially Life, Supersurface; The Happy Island by Superstudio, where humans live on this grid like landscape. This idea of removing all our surroundings and living in and around our own clutter is what influences my own thought.

These pieces were inspired by the work of Superstudio and how the pieces deteriorate demonstrates how we will slowly deteriorate ourselves. In the background you can see many buildings as if it were a city but they are so close together due to overpopulation problems. Meanwhile the rubbish piled up on the sides and the figures made from it too demonstrates my idea that our clutter will take over the world, as these rubbish monsters are beginning to form. I like to use kitchen appliances when doing these figures since they are the most universal objects and I simply like their simplicity.

Since this piece I have begun a small animation which is not finished yet but I took inspiration from the phrase ‘trash talk’, and interpreted the idea of a human and a trash monster stand-off.
