The crit helped me to discuss and think through my current ideas for FMP and how to get the project properly up and running. From the sketches that I have done so far in my sketchbook points were made by the tutor and other students in the group.
One point which was made is how I need to consider the anatomy and structure of the body for my drawings, as I have begun to shade some of my simple line drawings in a realistic manner since I like the gross offishness of it. The Uncanny is an element which I intend to bring into my work, as my sketches of humans are humans but are not quite there. The unsettled feeling that the uncanny brings about is what I aim to bring to my work, therefore by considering the anatomy more I can bring my work closer to reality but also understand reality better so I can distort it in a more informed and interesting way.
The distorted way that I draw too was said to be a good metaphor for the ideas for my project, how they are distorted is similar to how our opinions are distorted from social media today, and how I am going to create a distorted reality.
Another point which was made was how they liked my drawings of fat monsters, these are quick sketches I did envisioning what humans would look like if they ate and ate. The point was made that they look like mindless beings who just float around, that they are like giant stomachs that move around like slugs. These are helpful points since they have helped me pinpoint stronger characters and how I could develop them.
The way that I had used headlines, like ‘Boob Watch’ as brief inspiration for my sketches was something they liked too. They are a good source of inspiration for my drawings and could provide a good starting point for a more developed piece of work, I just need to keep checking for articles that are useful and catch my eye.
These were simply helpful points which I am going to think over the next few days.
